Petit Jean State Park - Arkansas Camping at its Best by Rich Herman
Arkansas is called the Natural State and if you have every visited the state you know why. Tall trees, clear lakes, hills, mountains, waterfalls, caves and interesting rock formations dot the landscape, especially in the northern part of the state. With over 50 state parks to choose from, there are many great places to camp in Arkansas. For years I had heard about Petit Jean State Park, but had never had a chance to visit it, but last Spring we finally made it there and we are glad that we did.
Near Morrilton, Petit Jean State Park is located just northwest of Little Rock, in northcentral Arkansas. It is difficult to describe the beauty of this area with mere words. This is truly a gorgeous area with tall pine trees, scenic bluffs, crystal clear creeks, water falls, tons of interesting rock formations, and lots of caves. There are approximately 20 miles of interconnected hiking trails throughout the park. These range from easy 1/4 mile hikes to long 12 mile hikes, and many others somewhere in between. Even though some of the hikes go up and down in elevation they are not difficult, and there are many resting spots along the way. While you are there be sure and hike some of the trails, and visit the Cedar Falls overlook, which provides a great view of the falls.
We visited here for the first time over the kids spring break, and spent three days hiking, exploring, and enjoying the beautiful scenery. The park has approximately 125 individual campsites and accepts reservations. Campsites can accommodate tents, trailers or RVs, and most of these have both water and electric hookups. The bathrooms have flush toilets and nice shower areas, and while we were there they were Very Clean and well kept. The campsites are
located in a heavily wooded area, with no underbrush, kind of a park like setting.
In addition to campsites, there are many cabins available to rent at Petit Jean State Park, and Mather Lodge offers about 24 guestrooms. The restaurant at Mather Lodge offers spectacular views. After a long day of hiking we stopped by the restaurant for dessert, and enjoyed the view while we rested.
Fall is a wonderful time to camp in Arkansas and enjoy a relaxing campfire when it starts cooling down in the evening. Be sure and take your family camping this year and enjoy some wonderful family time together exploring the great outdoors. You will be glad that you did. Have fun and stay safe!
