Is this Roosevelt Dime a Print Error?
I was rummaging through my change as I always do when I came across a very odd looking 2000 P Roosevelt Dime. It actually has like a shattered mark over the surface of the front of the coin. Sort of what cracked glass looks like when it has an impact point on it. The back looks normal but the crack lines go all the way to the rim. It seems extremely odd especially for something made of metal. My question is is this possibly some sort of striking error or is it likely from some bizarre everyday wear and tear on the coin.
The cracks are very VERY thin. I believe they are raised but I'm not positive. I'm going to take a magnifying glass and a high resolution camera to this later tonight.
Are these marks actual metal, and are they raised above the surface of the coin? If so, you may have found a coin that was struck with a cracked die.
When coins are struck, the dies have to hit the coin blank with several dozen tons of force to transfer their image to the coin. Because of all that pounding, sometimes the dies will develop cracks, and the image of those cracks will be transferred to the coin.
I've included a link that shows an example of what I'm talking about.
If it's a really spectacular example, there are collectors who collect cracked die coins.
